Match Report: Fakenham Town 1-0 Ely City
The Ghosts produced a determined performance to claim all three points with a 1–0 victory over Ely City with goalkeeper Reuben Lane delivering an outstanding debut performance between the sticks.
The Ghosts started the game positively and created the first opportunity inside five minutes. Watts, on his return from injury, struck a powerful effort from outside the box that flew narrowly past the post, giving the visitors an early warning.
Just two minutes later, Tan showed great skill to beat his defender before driving a low cross into the penalty area, but Ely managed to clear the danger for a corner.
Ely threatened in the 17th minute when a strong punch from Lane fell to the visitors’ number 11 on the edge of the area, though his effort drifted wide of the target.
The visitors picked up the first booking of the match shortly after when their number five was shown a yellow card for a rash challenge on Tan. Play was then briefly halted in the 28th minute when Raspberry required treatment, with Delgado introduced as his replacement making his debut when play resumed.
Despite the competitive nature of the first half, neither side was able to break the deadlock and the teams went into the interval level.
The second half began with Ely restarting play, but it was the Ghosts who struck the decisive blow. In the 49th minute, Tan delivered an excellent ball into the box where Valter finished superbly to give Fakenham the lead with his acrobatic celebration of a Cartwheel Backflip stunning the crowd just as much as the finish!
However, the game took a dramatic turn just four minutes later when Sturman was shown a second yellow card for a soft tackle, leaving the Ghosts to continue the match with ten men.
Fakenham responded with resilience and discipline. Reynolds replaced Valter on 58 minutes as the hosts looked to maintain their shape. Ely began to apply pressure, but Lane was equal to the task, producing a strong save in the 62nd minute before making another excellent stop just minutes later to preserve the lead.
Frustration began to show for the visitors as both their number 14 and number 3 were cautioned as the Ghosts continue to defend as a unit leaving Ely with no way through.
With the game entering its final stages, Jamba replaced Tan in the 82nd minute, while Coslett came on for Keeley in the 89th minute following an impressive shift.
Reynolds was shown a yellow card late on, but the biggest flashpoint at the beginning of stoppage time came when Ely’s number eight was sent off after grabbing Coslett by the neck and dragging him down.
Ely pushed forward desperately in the closing moments, but Lane produced two superb saves deep into added time to secure the clean sheet and cap a memorable debut.
The final whistle confirmed a hard-earned victory for the Ghosts and an important three points.
