Youth Referees

During the season, we will capture our Youth Referees and their experiences. Remember before you decide to judge or shout something at them, they are still learning! Not every decision will be correct. This isn’t the Premier League so please let the players play and allow referees to enjoy refereeing

In the meanwhile take a look at this text and think about the emotions the Referee for your game may feel…

The Youth Refereeā€¦

They stand on the field their heart beating fast

The boots have been checked and everyone’s passed

The assistants are ready we’re all good to go

Whistle up to my lips and one good strong blow

The game’s underway, now what will take place?

Will they argue with me, be up in my face?

Think a goal kick’s a corner, a tackle’s a foul?

Shall I keep on going or throw in the towel?

Do I give in to pressure and change my decision

Or ignore all their cries and shouts of derision?

I do this for fun, so the kids can enjoy it,

for the great sport of football I’m doing my bit

to help out the players so they have a game

as the FA keep saying – no referee, no game.

The guy in the middle is doing their best,

for them every match is now a real test.

Here’s hoping the players enjoy the game

but after abuse,  it’s never the same –

confidence is gone, afraid to blow,

the spectators tell him he doesn’t know

what he’s doing, but he’s been trained

the look on his face shows he’s in pain.

The abuse that he’s suffered, he’s shocked to the core.

Forget this refereeing lark – he’ll do it no more!
